The first step is to choose your target keyword. The target keyword is the main keyword you want to rank for in search engines. Once you have your target keyword, it’s time to research. You’ll need to find out who the major players are in your niche, what content is already ranking for your target keyword, and what kind of links your competitors are building.

This link-building technique may seem like a lot of work, but creating a successful link foundation is essential.

Once you have all this information, it’s time to start creating content. Your goal should be to produce the best possible content for your target keyword. Here are Four Places you Can get Foundational Links:

Directories

I believe directory links are the groundwork for all other types of links. They’re simple to come by, and they’re also fairly inexpensive to get. So from a marketing standpoint, they’re quite effective.

Find niche and specialist directories. Many niche directories sell mailing lists, which you can obtain by joining associations.

Here are some established directories that maintain quality listings:

  • Best of the Web
  • Ezilon
  • GoGuides
  • JoeAnt
  • UncoverTheNet

Stick to them because they are human-reviewed, organized by keyword categories, indexed on search engines, keeping contextual advertising to a minimum.

Here are some recommendations to increase your site’s exposure and improve its chances of being discovered by search engines:

  1. Submit to the Open Directory Project
  2. Pay for a Yahoo! Directory listing (particularly if the site is new), and
  3. Seek Wikipedia submission opportunities.

I’m aware that Wikipedia links have nofollow on them, making them virtually useless from a link popularity standpoint. But the traffic you’d receive from those connections is well worth it. If possible, attempt to include your site where it may provide a worthwhile contribution.

Authority Links

We’ll define authority links, which we can use to develop street credibility (business authority) and links we need for high ranks (search authority), and break them down into two categories.

A strong business authority puts you in the game.

Here are three links where you can get links that develop your reputation as a business owner:

  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Industry Associations
  • Networking Communities

Here are two tips:

  1. Find conferences in your niche and purchase links from their online programs/itineraries. Attendees may be interested in your company’s products/services. Learn more about them online
  2. Develop a keyword lens in Squidoo and include your RSS feeds.

To gain search authority, you’ll need links from high-ranking sites. But, securing links from these sites might be challenging since they are likely your top rivals. So instead, look for long-tail keywords and negotiate links from the top 20 listed companies.

Use the Google Directory to discover high PageRank topically relevant content sites, check out potential partner sites, and get links from these.

Tip: Search Wikipedia for your keywords and secure links from websites listed under “Resources” and “References” on your Discover pages. Why? They wouldn’t be included in that list unless they were highly reputable sources.

Independent Newsletters

In just about every industry sector, there are numerous independent newsletters. As many as possible join any that allow text link advertising in the ad copy—request for advertising rates.

If guest writers are in the newsletter, request to be included and contribute article content. Also, keep an eye out for reader comments and advertisements that mention additional newsletters and news sources.

Yellow Pages

Yellow page directories aren’t always the most popular links, but they’re still useful. If you’re restricted to an address, connect your home page to the contact page and submit your website to online yellow pages directories.

Businesses are sometimes in local and regional directories, including a website indexed by location.

Even if you’re not a physical store, if you pay for the smallest yellow page ad and provide your URL/phone number, yellow page directories will instantly add you to their online directory.

 

If you secured one link using each resource, you’d have 13 high-quality links with little work. That’s not bad when you consider the resources they provide. So don’t overlook utilizing these tools to get high-quality backlinks.

As a result, you’ll be able to start with a strong foundational link.
